Varrone departs F2 and Van Amersfoort Racing ahead of Baku, Yamakoshi replaces

Nico Varrone has ended his FIA Formula 2 season campaign early, departing Van Amersfoort Racing. He’s been replaced by F3 podium sitter, Hiyu Yamakoshi.

The 25 year old Argentine completed 18 races, with a best result of fourth, taken in the Miami Sprint Race, before a sixth place in the Montreal Feature became the only points he’d scored in seven rounds, stretching to Monza where he finished 10th.

Varrone had returned to single seater racing after a six year absence and had been racing in multiple sports car disciplines, with varying success including a class win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, as well as GT and LMP2 racing among others. In a statement the Argentinian thanked the team, and stated he would update in the near future about his next move.

Replacing him is 19 year old Japanese driver, Hiyu Yamakoshi, fresh from a strong rookie campaign in Formula 3 that saw him finish inside the championship top 10 with three podiums and one pole position.
